I was thrilled to be contacted for final rounds at Medtronic for a Senior Recruiter position.

I woke up the morning of interviews, refreshed, a little nervous but confident I would get the job.

My brown skirt suit, white blouse, brown heels, were all picked out hanging on the door of my closet.

As I put my clothes on I was telling myself "I will nail the interview today! I have all the skills they are looking for in an employee."

It was a snowy morning so I decided to leave 30 minutes early to make sure I arrived on time.

As I drove down the street ahead I saw flashing police car lights....

Wondering what was going on, I came to a stop sign and looked both ways, not only did I see a police car with its lights on, I saw a couple cars in the ditch.

I knew it was icy but I had an interview to get to and nothing was going to stop me!

As I continued on, I descended down a huge hill that was normally fine and that's when it happened...

Looking ahead I saw at least 7 cars piled up on the right shoulder and ditch. I tried to slow down, my brakes weren't working, the car kept going....AHHHHHH! I was screaming inside.

In a complete panic, somehow I took my foot off the brake, my knuckles were white gripping the wheel trying to maintain control of my car.

The momentum kept my car accelerating forward, I was so scared! Hooray!! I avoided the pile up but there was a car ahead of me that wasn't going as fast as I was.

SHIT I'm going to hit this car! My front bumper hit the side of the car in front of me. Our cars collided, we slowed down together and pulled over to the side of the road.

We exchanged info quickly because I was in a panic. I told the man I was on my way to an interview. He was very kind and even wished me luck!

At that moment I should have went home...instead I called my contact at Medtronic and told them I was in a car accident and I was going to be late for the interviews...I kept driving on.

Finally I made it, I breathed a huge sigh of relief and walked into the building.

Then there were the interviews...difficult, rigid, serious interviews. I could feel the sweat dripping down my back. Thank God I was wearing a blazer over my blouse so it wasn't visible.

Yup, you guessed it, I didn't get the job...

My magical morning pep talk wasn't enough to get the job...

As much as I wanted to blame the icy roads and car accident for the reason why I didn't get the job...

The TRUTH was IT WAS ALL MY FAULT...Me, the recruiter who interviews people for a living hadn't prepared for the interviews, I didn't have specific concrete examples ready to share, I didn't know how to sell myself and my skills...EPIC FAILURE...is what I felt...

When I was wallowing in the rejection, little did I know in the future I would get to recruit for companies all across the nation like Amazon, Target, Cargill, 3M, all the way down to teeny tiny companies...
